What is an SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interphase) ?

During Lithium Metal Battery (LMB) operation, an interphase passivation film (SEI) is formed between the Li metal phase and the ZIBs - Electrolytes for chemical batteries phase by spontaneous chemical reactions and electrochemical reductions of the latter.

SEIs are responsible for not only impeding the continuous parasitic reactions between the electrolyte and Li electrode, but also influencing the deposition and stripping behaviours of Li.

Despite their significance, SEIs are not well understood due to their low thickness, complex structure, heterogeneous composition, and dynamic nature (spatially and temporally dynamic in morphology and composition).

Uniformité

Non-uniform SEI results in lower resistance spots which Li-ions would preferentially travel through. When this happens, Li-ion flux along the length of the electrode is uneven and there is a buildup of ions at particular spots on the electrode. At these localized spots, the surface potential drops and results in lithium plating since at lower potentials, it is more kinetically favorable to plate metallic lithium than intercalate lithium. This could result in dendrite formation and affect the safety and lifespan of the battery.

Conclusion

The ideal SEI is thin, uniform, stable, ionically conductive, and electrically insulating.
